How to Recover Deleted Files (2025 Guide)

Lost a file? Don't panic. Whether you emptied the Recycle Bin or the files disappeared, here is the proven 5-step recovery path.

Deleted data isn’t actually “gone” when you delete it. Your OS simply marks that space as available for new data. As long as you don’t write new files, the old ones are still there.

  • Stop Using the Drive Immediately

Every minute the device is on, background processes could be overwriting your deleted files. Power off or disconnect if possible.

  • Check the Recycle Bin (or Trash)

It sounds simple, but 30% of our readers find their files here. Check specifically for the file name or extension.

  • Install Recovery Software (on a Different Drive)

Download your chosen tool to a USB drive or a different partition. Never install software on the partition you're scanning.

  • Run a Quick Scan First

Most recently deleted files will show up in a quick scan (2-5 minutes). If that fails, move to a Deep Scan.

  • Preview and Restore to New Location

Always verify the file content in the preview window before paying. Restore your data to an external drive or cloud storage.

Why This Works

The file system stores a “pointer” to your data. Deletion just breaks the pointer. Recovery software scans the raw sectors of your disk to find the “orphaned” data and rebuild the pointer for you.
